Plasma sterilization
The concept
Destruction of bacteria, viruses, fungi, pathogenic microorganisms, spores, prions, toxins, organic contaminants on various surfaces (including living tissues and open wounds) under the influence of atmospheric plasma.
Purpose
Cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, antibacterial treatment with simultaneous application of bactericidal, bioactive and biocompatible coatings.
Physical principles
- formation in atmospheric plasma of ionized particles and highly active short-lived chemical compounds - radicals of hydroxyl groups (OH), nitrogen oxides (NO, NO2), peroxynitrite (ONOO-), nitrous acid (HNO2), oxygen atoms and oxygen-containing molecules - hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), ozone molecules (O3), which have powerful antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effect;
- impact of high-speed and thermal flow of plasma components with vapors of additional reagents;
- atomization by high-energy ionized particles of atoms and molecules of the surface layer, destruction of chemical hydrogen bonds of organic molecules;
- better penetrating ability of electrons, which, colliding with adsorbed moisture molecules, contribute to formation of chemically active oxygen atoms and oxygen-containing molecules;
- providing a higher level of acidity of the surface layer of biological fluid, contributing to the corrosion of bacterial walls and their death;
- generating ultraviolet radiation with disinfecting properties.
Benefits of the process
- use of vacuum-free, small-sized and mobile equipment;
- no use of antiseptic solutions or toxic substances;
- use of non-toxic inert gas;
- low treatment temperatures of 50-60°C;
- gentle treatment of sensitive surfaces;
- environmentally friendly and safe process.
Application
Medicine, pharmacy, aerospace, food industry.
